About Us

The concept

The original concept was to specialise in jacket potatoes and baguettes with a large selection of freshly prepared home-made fillings. We have, however, consistently added to this and now serve our fillings in tortilla wraps, granary, crusty white and ciabatta bread in addition to baguettes and jacket potatoes. We also now include daily specials, a selection of freshly made salads, home-made desserts and home-made soup. We also offer a take-away service which accounts for about 8% of our trade.

  

  

The location

We realised that due to our location, well away from the main shopping area, we would have to offer an exceptional service, provide the best food, and work very hard to build up a solid customer base. We were also aware that restaurants found it hard to survive in Barnstaple, but survive we have, even despite the ravages of foot and mouth in 2001, which had a devastating effect on trade in North Devon.

 

Branded soups

One of the features at Sacks now is our home-made soup which changes on an almost daily basis. It comes in a huge variety of flavours including;  broccoli and parmesan -  pumpkin , ginger and cumin -  chickpea, honey roasted carrots, orange and coriander  -  goats' cheese and watercress. This has proved to be a winner with the customers and is so popular that we now bottle and  retail it, naming it ‘Mr Smith's Soups' after our chef. Breakfasts and fries

A sumptuous all day breakfast now appears on the menu and we have also added savoury lattice fries and potato wedges with melted cheese or a dip. However, we endeavour to keep fried food to a minimum.

 

Drinks

Sacks offers a wide variety of hot drinks including cappuccino, espresso, latte and mocha which are all made using high quality coffee beans. We also serve a variety of fruit and herbal teas and our hot chocolate with cream and wafers is second-to- none. We provide complimentary home-made truffles with all hot drinks, an original touch which has proved to be a great success.

We have a large selection of cold drinks, served in glasses with fresh orange or lemon slices. The fizzy drinks are made using freshly opened cans as we feel this gives a better taste than using syrups and carbonated water, as preferred by many outlets as a cheaper option.

 

A place to meet

Our coffee mornings are invariably busy with a background buzz of conversation, old friends meeting up, regulars returning for their third or fourth visit of the week and holiday makers tucking into all-day breakfasts before going on a shopping trip. Amidst all this activity, it is still an atmosphere that a lone female customer can feel comfortable in, enjoying a drink whilst browsing through the complimentary newspapers.

Lunchtimes

Lunchtimes are extremely busy due to our popularity and there are often queues outside the door. However, with a lot of our local customers on the lunchtime break, turnaround is quite speedy and with our well trained and friendly staff we are usually able to accommodate everyone. Orders are taken as soon as the table is ready and drinks served almost immediately with the meals usually following in seven to eight minutes.
